There are two options in terms of the space: 1. the east room (which Martin mentioned), which has terrific views of the city on three sides, and is simply a beautiful space; and 2. the McAulay studio which is more part of the life of the gallery, it is adjacent to the Turbine Hall where the crowds circulate. In either case, it is possible to have projection, computers, monitors etc. It would be possible to webcast this event. I encourage you to think about using the technology that we have, and making a kind of multmedia event. On a Saturday, the gallery is open till 22.00, and we could be there the whole day. Yes, I still need the 60 word description plus some of the participants (but only if they are confirmed). Members of other European collectives sounds like a good idea. The event could say: 'Oreste with X and Y'. I don't know who it would be interesting to invite, you tell me. If you have other questions, please ask. best wishes, Dominic -----Original Message----- From: Cesare Pietroiusti [mailto:cesarepietroiusti@worldnet.att.net] Sent: 01 February 2001 19:52 To: Dominic Willsdon Cc: Martin Clark Subject: R: Tate event dear Dominic and Martin, I agree very much on your consideration about the structured vs informal aspects of the event we are putting together. It is, infact, a very specific characteristic of Oreste, since its beginning: vacation or work? communication or human relations? friends or colleagues? public or private? and so on. I must say, however, that there is another central point, that is the individual - group opposition/relation, that I feel critical. Anyway, I have exchanged some idea with other oreste artists (namely Emilio Fantin, Giancarlo Norese, and Caroline Bachmann), and we think the format could be a one-day open event, where conditions for getting together, relaxing, exchanging ideas and networking are infact given, and where a certain number of artists' projects, or proposals (that could be related with food, or publications, or the exchange itself, or inviting others, or other...) can fit, and maybe create some sort of "timing" (consequently, a schedule). Until what time you think the event could go on in the evening? Which are the characteristics of the space where it could happen? Are technical equipments (such as slideprojector, monitors, computer with connection, but also chairs, tables etc.) available? You mentioned in a previous email you need a 60 words description of the event before Feb 16. Do you confirm this? Do you think all the names of the participants (individual and groups) have to be in it? Mentioning "key figures" from other part of Europe whom were you thinking to? I would like very much to involve others (specially representatives of artists collectives) to attend and/or send material for the event. Sorry for all these questions... Hope to hear from you soon, Cesare -----Messaggio originale----- Da: Dominic Willsdon A: 'cesarepietroiusti@hotmail.com' ; 'cesarepietroiusti@worldnet.att.net' Cc: Martin Clark (E-mail) Data: marted 30 gennaio 2001 10.37 Oggetto: Tate event Dear Cesare, I had a conversation with Martin yesterday, we talked about the draft proposal you sent to him and agreed that it is the basis of what could be a very interesting event. We thought maybe it would be good to have a central concept, something to which everyone could orient themselves; and also that we need a basic (even if minimal) programme for the day (let's say it is one day for the time being). Of course, we don't want to over-programme things, I am not looking for a conventional conference, in fact precisely not that. But it is a question of the balance between informality (and formlessness) and a formal structure. Thinking in this way, it started to seem to us that this question might itself be the key concept. It seemed to us that part of what characterises a network 'institution' like Oreste is the way 'forms' (specific events) emerge, temporarily, from formlessness (the absence of conventional, fixed institutions), and then dissolve again. Martin and I thought that this question - form and formlessness, applied to events and communication rather than (as traditionally) the art object - might be the focus of the day in June. And it could be that this question also relates us back to the situation in which the Arte Povera artists found themselves. What do you think? If something like this appeals, maybe, between us all, we could draft some kind of proposal/description of what we want to do. We could send this to a couple of key people in Europe who could make specific contributions, supplementing the 'Oreste people'. I think that the minimal structure we need includes identifying (even if not necessarily making explicit) certain core participants, and then opening it up to whoever attends. My feeling is that event will be open for people to drop in when they want during the day, but I am not against having a 'closed' session (as you suggested) as well. You were asking about resources. How much I can spend depends on what form the event takes, but 4000 (around US$6000) could be made available (which might or might not include food etc.). Do let me know what you think about all this. best wishes, Dominic Dominic Willsdon Curator: Events and Courses Tate Modern Bankside London SE1 9TG tel. +44 (0)20 7401 5099 mobile +44 (0)779 626 4702
